What we did!

Ok, its time to reveal the answer of what we did when faced with the couple asking for money at the airport as discussed in last week’s blog entry.

DollarsUnlike 93% of those who completed last week’s poll we decided to give the stranded tourists all of the money they needed to fly onto Kuala Lumpur. We prayed and felt it was the right thing to do and so dashed to the ATM machine to lend them the several hundred dollars they needed to purchase their tickets.

The result? They caught their flight to KL and onwards to Europe and a few days later the borrowed money was gratefully and fully returned to our account.

As I look back I wonder if I’d have written this blog entry if our money had not been returned, or if instead I’d have spent several weeks grumpily regretting the decision?

I think what I’ve realised is that in a world so obsessed with making money and keeping hold of it at all costs it is very releasing to follow Jesus’ very counter cultural words and way of living. It would seem he is much more interested in our desire to give and bless others than in our expectation of getting anything back:

“Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High”Luke 6v30-35
